Keeping a Discovery 5 running with the key out
Fleets that ran Discovery 4s on rural and utility style work have moved to the Discovery 5, and the work itself has not changed. It still parks at remote sites with equipment wanting power and nobody spare to sit in the driving seat.
Towing, kit and long days off road
A Discovery 5 might haul a trailer of rescue gear, a generator or a horsebox, and carry radios and lamps of its own. Once it stops, the driver is out doing the job. A turning engine is what keeps all of that alive.
Why switching off is not the answer
Shutting down passes the entire electrical load to a battery that was never meant to carry it for long. That works for a short while, then fails. Leaving it ticking over unlocked instead means an expensive SUV left alone somewhere nobody is watching.
Carrying the unit over from the old fleet
If your Discovery 4s already carry CAN KONTROL RUNLOCK, those modules can be rewritten to suit the newer vehicles at no cost, as explained on our Discovery 4 runlock page. Fresh units are configured to order in Chorley. Either route gives a Discovery 5 that keeps going after you depart, key in hand, locked up behind you.

Questions about the Land Rover Discovery 5
- Ours are keyless. Is that a problem?
- Keyless and key vehicles handle locking differently, so it is an early question from our engineer. Supply year and specification and it gets checked prior to programming.
- What brings the Discovery out of runlock?
- Somebody pressing a pedal, lowering the parking brake, or the driving door being opened, in each case outside the agreed conditions. Any one of them ends it.
- Can we trial one vehicle before doing the fleet?
- Yes. Begin with one Discovery, and once you are content we configure the remainder to match.
