Engine runlock

Keeping a Skoda Octavia II running with the key out

Plenty of Octavia II taxis are still earning, clocking up airport runs and school contracts. The job is mostly waiting, and in winter a passenger expects a warm cab. Stepping away from a running car with its key still dangling in the ignition to fetch a fare is something most drivers have done at least once.

A car that spends its shift on the rank

Private hire is long gaps between short bursts of driving. Outside a station or a hospital the Octavia sits with its heater, card reader and phone charger going. Turning off between every job means a cold interior and a battery cranking the engine again and again.

Walking away from a running taxi

Meeting someone inside a terminal, or walking an elderly fare up their garden path, takes you away from the car. If the motor runs while the key sits in the ignition, anyone passing has an open vehicle. Turn it off instead and your fare climbs into a chilly back seat.

How the Octavia II stays warm without you

CAN KONTROL RUNLOCK carries on running the Octavia once you take the key out, and you are still able to lock it. It works from what the car already reports over its CAN bus, including ignition status, whether the Octavia is moving, the handbrake's position and any touch of a door or pedal. Climb in, put your foot on the brake or ease the handbrake down, and the cab is out of runlock and driving as it always has. Each unit is prepared for the Octavia II generation before it leaves Chorley.

Questions about the Skoda Octavia II

Mine is an estate rather than a hatch. Should I still ask?
Yes. We list the Octavia II generation, and an engineer confirms your exact car from its year and version before anything is sent.
Is there anything to remember when a fare is ready to go?
Nothing new. Sit down, let off the handbrake or rest a foot on a pedal, and the Octavia comes out of runlock so you drive away as normal.
I am replacing the car next year. Can the unit come with me?
Yes. It can be reset for whatever you drive next, and that reconfiguration costs you nothing.
