Engine runlock

Runlock system for the Vauxhall Astra K

Councils and contractors use the Astra K for highway inspection, enforcement and site visits, often with a beacon bar, a tablet mount and a camera fitted. The inspector parks, walks the defect or the street, and comes back. Every one of those stops raises the same question about the engine.

Inspection work, one stop after another

An inspector logging potholes or checking a works site may leave the car many times an hour. The beacon has to keep flashing on a live road, and the tablet and camera are often charging off the car. Without the engine that load falls on the battery.

Engine off or key left in

Switch off and the beacon dims as the battery sags. Leave it running and the key sits in a car parked on a verge with the driver out of sight. Upfitters are often asked to solve this at build, before the car ever reaches the depot.

Explained the way a driver sees it

Pull the key, and the Astra carries on running; lock it if you are walking off. Come back, open up, sit down and step on the brake or free the handbrake, and it is an ordinary car again. Behind that, CAN KONTROL RUNLOCK is following the Astra K's CAN messages for ignition, speed and handbrake, plus pedals and doors, with a setup prepared for the car before it ships.

Questions about the Vauxhall Astra K

We are building marked Astra K cars. When should runlock go in?
During the build is the tidiest time, alongside the beacon and other wiring. An engineer checks which year and version the cars are first.
Will drivers need training?
Very little. They remove the key and walk away, and the car comes out of runlock as soon as they use a pedal or the handbrake.
If the council contract ends, can the units be reused?
They can be removed, set up again and fitted to the next vehicles, and altering the configuration costs nothing.
