Engine runlock

Volkswagen Crafter runlock for ambulance and conversion builds

The Crafter from 2017 is a popular base for ambulances, patient transport and specialist conversions. Once the crew are out at a patient, the saloon must stay warm and the medical equipment powered, sometimes for a long time. So the engine must carry on while the cab stands empty.

A heated saloon and a full kit list

Ambulance saloons are heated so the patient can be treated in comfort, and that heat depends on the engine. Monitors, suction, lighting and radios add to the load. On a cold night none of that can be allowed to fade.

Converters are asked to solve it at build

Operators expect a converted Crafter to arrive with the runlock question already answered. If it is left to the end user, the habit becomes keys left in ignitions, and a running ambulance stands unlocked outside an address. A fitted, configured unit avoids handing that problem down the line.

What arrives for each Crafter

Each CAN KONTROL RUNLOCK leaves us already set for its Crafter and the conversion on it, so the workshop fits a unit matched to the van. Over the Crafter's CAN bus it follows the ignition, the road speed, the handbrake and the state of every pedal and door, and it keeps the motor turning after the key has gone, with the van lockable if the crew want it. When they return and free the handbrake or use a pedal, the Crafter is back to normal. Our work on emergency vehicle power covers more of this.

Questions about the Volkswagen Crafter

Is the earlier Crafter covered?
Our Crafter listing starts at 2017. For an older van, pass on the plate and we can advise before anything is ordered.
Can you supply units to a converter in batches?
Yes. Give us the base vehicles, the numbers and what each build powers, and the units arrive set up for them.
What about refrigerated Crafters?
The same idea applies: the engine keeps running for the fridge while the driver is at the door. Send details of the conversion and we will set the unit up for it.
