How to add cruise control to your car

Fit a CAN bus cruise control module that is configured for your exact vehicle. It reads speed from the car's own network, holds the speed you set and lets go when you brake, and it needs no cable on the throttle. The work is a workshop job, and the part that matters most is getting the configuration right for the model.

The problem: a long journey and nothing to hold the speed

Cruise control is one of those options that nobody thinks about when buying a car and everybody wants a year later. Base trims often lack it, and a car bought second hand may simply not have been ordered with it. The driver ends up making hundreds of tiny throttle corrections over a motorway run.

Searching for a fix turns up two kinds of answer. One is a mechanical kit that pulls the throttle with a motor, the other is an electronic module that talks to the car. On anything built in the last fifteen years or so, the second is the one worth considering.

The agitation: what makes a retrofit go wrong

A modern car is a network. The engine, brakes, dashboard and stability systems all trade messages over the CAN bus, and they are quick to complain when something unfamiliar joins in. The usual failures are easy to list:

  • A module meant for another model that connects but misreads the car, so the speed hold cancels at random.
  • A warning light on the dashboard that was not there before the fit.
  • A diagnostic session to trace the fault, followed by a second appointment for the customer.

None of those are exotic. They are the ordinary result of treating a set of different cars as one.

The solution: a module set up for your vehicle

The CAN KONTROL CRUISE is built at Scorpion Automotive's electronics factory in Chorley and configured for the vehicle before it ships. It adds set, hold and resume control using the car's own data. Configuration updates come from us at no charge, and the same unit can be reprogrammed for another vehicle if you change cars.

If you have been comparing it with the CANM8 Cruise Control range, see our CANM8 cross-reference. It lists the two side by side.

What happens when you enquire

You tell us the vehicle, how many you need and whether you are trade or an end customer. An engineer checks it against our coverage data, confirms the configuration and the way the driver operates the system, and replies with the next step. Nothing is ordered until the fit is agreed.

Pick your vehicle

These are the models we are asked about most. Each page covers one vehicle in its own right.

Not there? The full list of cruise control vehicles shows every model we hold a configuration basis for, and the vehicle coverage page shows what else we can do for each.

Tell us the car.

One enquiry, one engineer, and a configuration confirmed for your vehicle.

Thanks, that's with our engineers.

Frequently asked questions

Can cruise control be added to any car?
Not any car, but a long list of them. Our coverage data lists 236 car and van models for cruise control, and each is confirmed against the exact year and trim before anything is supplied.
Do I need to fit a new throttle pedal or cable?
Not with the CAN KONTROL CRUISE. It works from the speed and drive information the vehicle already sends on its network, so there is no mechanical actuator to mount.
Who should fit it, a garage or the owner?
A workshop is the normal route, because the module needs connecting to the vehicle bus and configuring correctly. Owners can still start an enquiry, and the form asks whether you are trade or an end customer.
What if my car is not on the list?
Send the make, model and year. The list is a starting point and not a limit, and an engineer will tell you whether we can configure cruise for it.
Is the CAN KONTROL CRUISE the same as the CANM8 Cruise Control range?
Our published cross-reference places the CAN KONTROL CRUISE alongside the CANM8 Cruise Control range as the equivalent product line. They are separate product ranges, and both are built in Scorpion Automotive's Chorley factory.
